Abstract:SThe Karimenu II dam backfill material site in Kenya is located in the upper reaches of the reservoir area; The backfill materials is mainly the high liquid limit silt, The Characteristics of the material soil is high porosity ratio, high water content, large plastic index, high clay content. The optimal water content is 48.5% , which is similar to the natural water content, The average maximum dry density was 1.13 g/cm3, and the average clay content was 46.7% . According to the design requirements ,The degree of compaction soil samples is 0.96 with micro-permeability, medium compressibility. After the roller compaction test, the soil in the reservoir area can meet the construction quality control requirements . The recommended moisture content of soil should be controlled in the range of optimum moisture content ω0-5% to ω0 ,and The compaction degree of natural water content can arrive the design requirements.
