This article takes the practice of two drainage pumping stations reconstruction in the central city of Shanghai as an example. It shows that the reconstruction of pumping stations should not only be limited to satisfying the functions of municipal drainage facilities, but also implement new development concepts, with the goal of improving people’s sense of acquisition and satisfaction. According to the function type of the pumping station, different goals can be set to improve the sense of acquisition. The rainwater pumping station has a limited operating time, therefore the enclosed municipal facilities can be transformed into an open and shared pumping station park based on the needs of the surroundings and the actual conditions of the pumping station. Sewage pumping stations generally need to be operating throughout the year and there are certain hazards (such as bad odours, etc.). Although it may not be considered to open to the public, but the sense of smell and sight of the surrounding residents should be improved to eliminate the NIMBY effect as much as possible.
