Abstract:SIn recent years, with the construction of large-scale projects, the foundation is increasingly extended to the deep underground strata, and the deep strata in Zhejiang often encounter a kind of clay soil similar to the Q4 era, containing diatom fossils, with different physical and mechanical properties from conventional soft clay soils, and there will be a sudden decrease in strength and a sudden increase in deformation under the action of external forces, which will adversely affect the safety of the project. In this paper, through a project in Zhejiang, this paper studies such diatom-containing cohesive soils from the aspects of microstructure, mineral composition and indoor geotechnical tests, summarizes their engineering characteristics, and provides a useful reference for engineering construction..
