Abstract:The local stability calculation method for compression plates is one of core calculation methods in Specifications for Design of Highway Steel Structural Bridge (JTG D64—2015). Through the practical design application and some theoretical analysis, some problems are found in the local stability calculation method in the specification, which are (1) the formula for calculating the reduction coefficient of local stability of the plate element is inconsistent with the limit value of the width to thickness ratio. The reduction coefficient is significantly less than 1 when the upper limit of width / thickness ratio is taken, and (2) the rigid-flexible discrimination formula for the transverse ribs is not accuracy enough, which will result in the discontinuity of the local stability reduction coefficient at the rigid-flexible boundary of the transverse ribs. The mutation amplitude may be large. And the reduction coefficient may decrease when the transverse rib is strengthened from flexible to rigid.
