Abstract:As the backbone of spatial connections between urban clusters, urban expressways are an important component of the road network structure in the central urban area. Currently, the capacity of the expressways network is basically saturated, and traffic congestion occurs frequently during morning and evening peak hours in Shanghai. By thoroughly investigating the domestic and foreign research achievements and application cases of tidal lanes, and combined with the spatiotemporal characteristics of the traffic operation of expressways in the central urban area of Shanghai, the adaptability of tidal lanes of expressway network in Shanghai is analyzed, conducted, and then the necessary traffic demands and traffic facility conditions are proposed. Taking the North-South Elevated Road as an example, the applicable scheme of the tidal lane is elaborated. The effect of tidal lane management on traffic efficiency is analyzed. And VISSIM simulation is used for verification. Finally, the suggestions of implementation conditions, supporting measures and risk avoidance of tidal lanes on urban expressways are proposed from the perspective of engineering implementation, which provides the reference for other similar projects.
