Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization and the continuous growth of transportation demands, the planning and construction of large-scale transportation infrastructure must be forward-looking to accommodate the future development needs. However, during the actual construction process, the specific circumstances of the relevant detailed planning and engineering construction are often impossible to determine, which brings difficulties to precise reservation decisions. The survey and design work for the S7 Highway officially began in 2015, while the research work was initiated even earlier. Numerous uncertainties existed during the research and design processes. The technical methods and practical applications for long-term reservation in large-scale transportation infrastructure are discussed. And the key elements of long-term reservation including land reservation, technical interface reservation, and functional expansion reservation are analyzed. From the perspective of the year 2025, the adaptability of the initial reservation design is re-examined. Today, when the external conditions are becoming increasingly clear, the successes and shortcomings of the initial reservation are discussed. The proposition that "reserving space is superior to reserving structure" is put forward in order to provide support and reference for the sustainable development of transportation infrastructure.
