Abstract:Based on the example of the Liuan G312 Heliu Boundary - Yingbin Avenue Intersection Section Rapidization Reconstruction Project, four intersection channelization design methods of designing signal control at intersections, designing larger traffic islands at intersections, designing smaller traffic islands at intersections, and designing variable speed lanes at the entrances and exits of auxiliary roads can be selected when the the "right-out and right-in" traffic organization mode is listed for the auxiliary roads and intersecting roads of urban expressways. Starting from five evaluation indicators, namely, the traffic efficiency affecting the turning traffic flow on intersecting roads, the interference to the straight-going traffic flow on auxiliary roads, the land occupation scale of the intersection area, the engineering cost of the intersection area, and the driving safety, the advantages and disadvantages of the four intersection channelization design methods are compared. Four optimization schemes for intersection channelization design are discussed under three applicable conditions, such as the size of turning traffic volume at different intersecting road locations, the land use constraints, and the level of engineering investment costs, which can be referred for the similar projects in the future.
