Abstract:After the reconstruction and expansion of expressways to increase the design speed, it is necessary to add the road sections to those originally not to set the transition curves. However, the safety benefits brought by adding transition curves do not match the investment costs. In order to meet the practical need of the reconstruction and expansion projects in China, the setting conditions of transition curves for expressways are studied. Through the driving simulator experiments, and based on the analysis of the driving stability during entering and exiting circular curves, the criteria for setting the transition curves are proposed. In accordance with relevant foreign norms and regulations, the threshold for the radius of the circular curve is determined when no transition curve is set. The results indicate that when the radius of the circular curve is less than 3000m, the impact of not setting a transition curve on the operation of drivers begins to increase. When the curve radius is less than 1500m, not setting a transition curve will have a significant impact on the operation of drivers. Finally, it is recommended that when the design speed is 120km/h, the minimum radius of a circular curve without a transition curve is 4000 m. The research conclusion can provide the reference for the reconstruction and expansion of expressways, which is conducive to improving the scientific nature of route design.
