Abstract:The urbanization process in China continues to accelerate, and the demand for high-quality road travel is increasingly rising. The vertical design quality of municipal road intersections significantly impacts the travel experience of the residents, and it is often designed as a key point for road quality control in a focused and specialized manner. High-quality vertical design schemes play a crucial role in ensuring road safety and smooth drainage, and enhancing comfort. Municipal road intersections typically built on flat and hilly terrains exhibit both common design principles and distinct design features due to different terrain characteristics. The respective challenges in vertical design of municipal road intersections in plains and mountainous areas are studied. By analyzing and summarizing the engineering cases, it is considered that ensuring safety and smooth drainage are the fundamental principles of vertical design, but in plain areas, drainage should be given priority, while in mountainous areas, the principle of safety and stability should be adhered to first.
