Abstract:With the continuous acceleration of urbanization, the existing urban main roads are facing multiple challenges such as traffic congestion, poor conditions for slow traffic, aging facilities and rough management. The Sanqiao New Street - Daqing Road - Changle Road is an east-west traffic artery in Xi'an with the problems of aging traffic facilities, discontinuities in the slow-traffic system and traffic bottlenecks. Relying on the comprehensive improvement project of this highway, by analyzing its current problems, reconstruction goals and technical strategies, an overall reconstruction goal of "unobstructed main roads, separation of fast and slow roads, smart and green, and people-oriented" is proposed. And the practical approaches of this project are systematically sorted out in optimizing road cross-sections, refining intersection design, enhancing continuity of slow-traffic systems, improving bus-metro connections and deploying smart traffic facilities. The research result shows that for the urban main roads in high-density built-up areas, the refined design of systematic collaboration and multi-disciplinary integration can achieve the comprehensive benefits such as unobstructed main roads, separation of fast and slow roads, travel safety and significantly improved quality under the premise of not major demolition and construction, providing a reference for the upgrading and reconstruction of similar urban roads.
