Abstract:To address the issues of excessive human-induced vibration and insufficient comfort in a circular steel overpass at a major road intersection, the finite element software is used to analyze the structural vibration characteristics, and to compare the impacts of girder stiffness, pier-beam consolidation forms, and whether or not the ring is closed. Comfort is evaluated according to the German Guideline for the Design of Footbridges EN03. In response to the vertical fundamental frequency not meeting the domestic code limits, a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) is designed for vibration control. The results indicate that the girder stiffness and the support forms significantly influence the natural frequencies, and the TMD effectively controls the vertical peak acceleration responses, meeting the comfort requirements, which provides a reference for the design and vibration control of similar circular steel overpasses.
